I think this is a really fruitful starting-point. Of course there are many examples in the prog repertoire that don’t treat time in this way, but I reckon there are sufficient (not least in post-milennial prog) to make it worth investigating (whether its prog as such that brings about your ‘specific way to perform and appreciate time’, or whether that simply becomes one avenue among others, I’m not sure). My question is whether you’ve thought of this in terms of either Barbara Barry’s or Jonathan Kramer’s theories of musical time (both are deeply interested in time as a philosophical concept, which strikes me as a necessary component of such thinking)? Sometimes (Topographic Oceans perhaps, the playout to Shadows of the Hierophant, etc.) I think the attitude to ‘length’ goes markedly beyond operatic approaches (for instance) – Kramer’s ‘vertical time’ perhaps.
