The scope of "progressive rock"

This theme exists to address the assumption that the scope of what ‘progressive rock’ encompasses is known, is fully defined, and is complete. It thus asks questions of musical style, of genre, and of praxis, and is particularly interested in the question of the extent to which it is valuable for prog discourse to incorporate, or to overlap, ambient music, heavy metal, psychedelia, experimentalism? What might be gained from a prog perspective on (for example) the Alan Parsons Project, Be-Bop Deluxe, Henry Cow, Dan ar Braz, Dillinger Escape Plan, ELO, Fairport Convention, Peter Gabriel, Jane Siberry, Kate Bush, Led Zeppelin, Magnum, Quatermass, Queensryche, Roxy Music, Saga, or Talk Talk?

It is here, perhaps, that the theoretically most sophisticated arguments in the project might develop.
