Progressive rock beyond the 1970s

This theme exists to address both the continued existence of progressive rock in the immediate aftermath of its decline in visibility in the later 1970s, and its renewal in subsequent decades, a renewal which has become intensified in the last few years. There are a number of possible developments which can account for these changes: we are interested in the extent to which this might be related to parental preferences, to changes in distribution networks, to processes of re-evaluation and their enabling. Most importantly, we are interested in the extent to which there might be single, dominant arguments, or whether there were multiple “enclaves of sustainability in which local factors apply”.

To date, coverage of this theme is likely particularly to focus on Dream Theater and on the links with other styles (particularly what goes under the label of ‘progressive metal’).
